Canada and New York

Mom picked me up in Cheboygan and we headed through upper Ontario to get east. Stayed in North Bay (Lake Nipigon and Mattawa River) and followed along the Ottawa River - same general direction of the voyaguers. Went through the capital of Ottawa, the city.

Got to Malone/Burke, New York to see the boyhood home of Almanzo Wilder, future husband of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Original home, reconstructed barns (with the help of archaeology). Even saw Trout River! And these are but a few pictures I could put on from the ones we took. You could say a slight obsession with the Ingalls/Wilder story. Stayed in Montpelier, VT.

-Along the highway in Canada.

-Ottawa capital buildings.

-Front view of the Wilder house.

-Side view of the Wilder house - no pictures inside!

-The reconstructed barns.

The Trailers...

For the entire summer, but mostly August and September, we've been trying to walk, hike and/or bike every road, trail and path on Mackinac Island. We finished it at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2005. Woo-hoo!

Awausee Trail

And finally, the one that beat them all (and beat us up a little, too), the Awausee Trail. It goes 650 feet up to the top of the hill to overlook the Agawa Valley, crosses several ravines, goes along the old loggers' trail AND is said to be "strenuous" or "difficult." It said to give 4-6 hours to complete it. Although we almost 'died' in the first part, we proudly made it in under 3, which we thought was amazing! Thanks to Dennis who told us we HAD to do it.

Threw out my shoes after this trip! That goes to show you the "Summer of Fitness" was just that...

-The sunrise in the morning. Pretty hazy this day.

-The trek upward and onward.

-The first overlook toward the islands and Lake Superior.

-Stephanie and I resting atop the 'mountain.'

-The Agawa Valley. All worth it!

Next trip - Canada, Almanzo Wilder's birthplace, Cape Cod and more! Cape Cod the longest with Chris, Sherry and the kids!

A Few More Falls

Just the ending to the day. Couldn't trek too much more, so we just waded in the rapids and saw the first set of falls along the Pinguisbi Trail on the Sand River. Fun climbing.

-Along the rapids on the Sand River.

-Very nice rock with rapids.

-Stephanie and I, enjoying the rest.

-The falls along Sand River.

-Our campsite at Agawa Campground. VERY nice campgrounds all around!

Falls, Falls, Falls - No Moose

Did the Voyaguer Trail to see the falls. Uggg...the trail was a little more than we expected - strenuous! We thought of hitchhiking back (it IS Canada)...linear trails - not the best. Still very pretty. The sky cleared up so we did the Trapper's Trail, no moose, but some active ducks that kept flying around.

-Scenic High Falls, south of Wawa on the head of the Voyaguer Trail.

-Start (and end) of the very long-lasting trail.

-From the top of the canyon along the trail.

-Silver Falls.

-Trapper's Trail. Very pretty, but no moose. Maybe some tracks???

Pancake Bay, the Shore Along the Way and Wawa

Stephanie and I stayed at Pancake Bay, then headed up the highway (17 - not built fully until 1960!). Stopped along the way at some shorelines. Then to Wawa to see the goose (get food) and start on the next part of .... hiking!

-Pancake Bay sign, with Jacques, the grizzled voyaguer.

-Katherine Cove, great beach, great rocks, great name.

-Old Woman Bay, awesome rock (with old woman's face?)AND...

-...great rocks!

-the goose at Wawa, which means "wild goose."

Mackinac Reunion

Although rain threatened all day, we had a beautiful night for the reunion. 47 years of past and present staff of Fort Mackinac and the park. About 150 people all together. It's taken a week just to recover!

And just think - the picture above is just the girls (historic house interpreters, wenches, crafties, whatever you want to call them) that showed up! With the quilts, of course.

...and the guys (guides)...

Castle Rock

Also, in the same day, we finally went to Castle Rock in St. Ignace.

p.s. All the pictures are by Stephanie, who has the digital camera.
