The Coast

Heather and I started off to the Med coast. First was Akko (Acre)- a great little town that lived within these very ancient ruins and walls. Not too touristy at all. First, the amazing market (souk).
-Spices.
-Kids kicking the still alive catfish.
-And all the other seafood.
-And the sweets.
-Crusader City with giant hall and peaked arches. Marco Polo once visited here.

-And "hidden" tunnels.
-You can just imagine them racing to run off to the coast in these. This one is huge. Apparently, these Templers Tunnels were just found in 1994 when a local woman complained about a blocked sewer.

-The Mediterranean Sea.
-The ancient walls.

-A city square.
-The El Jazzar mosque - jazzar means "butcher." Not a nice guy was Ahmed Pasha al-Jazzer, but he shaped the city into what it is today.

-On to Haifa and the Ba-hai Gardens and the Shrine of the Bab. Most of the gardens and shrine were closed off. Still pretty cool.
-Shrine of the Bab. Fascinated by this newer religion.
-Looking to Haifa and the German Colony.
-The stairs off to the side we had to climb. It felt like 1400 steps (that's what's at the gardens).

-On to Tel Aviv - Jaffa. A friend let us stay at his apartment in the city...
-..which has this amazing view. And invited us to a great night before.
-We ate a great breakfast on the sea.
-And then went to Old Jaffa.

-Andromeda's Rock.

-Then north to Caeserea. Huge, built by Herod (of course) and living up to the hype now that it has been uncovered. Really amazing.

-A "small" hippodrome.

-The amphitheatre.

-The palace.

-Heather and I try the chariot.
